Using Drama to teach Bible Stories

The Disciples in the storm as Jesus slept. Mark 4
Full Day Workshop 8-4PM
26 September 2014 SAIGON

Today we hope to accomplish 4 things:
1. Learn some drama skills projection, using all of the body, creating pictures)
2.Writing plays based on Bible stories:  Mark 4. Story of the Seeds.
Calming the Storm.
3.Writing and Performing these stories in different ways.
4. Debrief (that's what's below...)

What did you learn? Highlights? Questions
  • We can be more flexible sometimes: If there is not enough costumes, we can be creative to use anything!
  • Do we elaborate on details of story? Talk afterward? Does the audience just figure it out or do we explain? What did Jesus do? Let the drama be clear about the lesson. And the audience and performers learn.
  • Narrator is a crutch. “Show instead of tell.” Writers: try to avoid using a narrator.
  • Q: Western countries do people often use drama in church service? A:1880s-90s drama was more popular in USA. Now, when I visit, I see many churches use more short film. Often to promote activities of the church.
  • Drama in education has opened my eyes to many new ideas!
  • Churches around the world will always use it for Christmas and Easter. They want to make a big prouduction and spend money… but acting and script is poor. Use throughout the year and develop skill through the year.
  • Toymaker and son example.
  • Idea of don’t need to explain everything to them.
  • New church with new believers…how to teach them more…today I learned a lot of ideas to teach them Bible.
  • Drama classes for children in the church. Use Bible stories like this, and the kids will go back and tell parents!
  • Drama relaxes people!
