ADULTS: Parenting Toolbox - Using some Forum Theatre

Creative Parenting Toolbox

Two sessions
10:30-12:00  & 2-3:30

10:30-10:40
  • Ice breaker- Multiple choice test on parenting (using humour and loads of examples pros and con on dealing with issues in raising children)

10:40-10:45 - Welcome Intro to the Creative Parent Tool Box
  • Help maintain and repair around the house.
  • What are the die die must have tools?
  • In the same way with parenting we need some typical tools for prevention of problems and fixing issues that have become problems

10:45-11:05 - 20 minutes Sample Parenting examples
  • TOOL #1 Discpline/ (money, homework, chores)
  • TOOL #2 Consistency
  • TOOL #3 Good listener (reflective listening)
  • TOOL #4 Role Model (do as I do, not just as I say, in Respecting God, others & creation)

Charicatures of parents
1. Two Families
2. The family who uses their toolkit
  • SHOW first family (over the top charicature)
  • ASK: “What did you see?”
  • SHOW second family
  • ASK: “What did you see?”
  • Give examples of other creative ways to handle it.

Using Tools for Prevention of Problems
eg. Self Esteem
    • Child bullied at school
    • Eating Habits
    • Feeling Not Good enough

Responsibility
    • Chores
    • Money
    • Belongings

Using Tools for Fixing Problems
Eg Disrespect 
    • Interrupting
    • Leaving things around the house

Quarreling/Yelling


11:05-11:15
  • Brainstorm in groups of 4-6 other issues for parenting at home, decide which are the top 3 issues (preventative and fixing problems that parents face) NOTE: We must do our own brainstorming to be prepared!

11:15-11:20
  • All small groups come back – write on white board at least one idea they came up with

11:20-11:30
  • Separate into age groups parents of 6-7 year olds, 8-9’s, 10-11’s
  • Pick one situation on the board
  • Think of 2 creative ways to handle  it and share them with the group.

  • Sharing/Discussion

11:45-12
  • 2 Families come back to demonstrate how to deal with lack of creative thinking and antisocial behavior to set up the…
  • Wrap up/ Wonder years/ How the kids can benefit. Give a handout. Offer more fun workshops like this.
