Make a list of at least 10 of the most influential experiences which have shaped your life. You'll use this in class next week, so make sure to bring this list to class.
1. "It's just a matter of what you love." a godly guy answering why I was complaining about why I could memorize my lines for a Shakespeare play so much faster than the assigned Bible verses i needed to memorize for a Theology class. OUCH. (1981) 2. "Pretend." Getting a pink leotard, leather slippers and tutu for Christmas and learning that it DIDN'T mean that I was going to get lessons. (1967) 3. A summer mission trip to France and falling in love in front of the Cathedrale de Notre Dame. (1982) 4. Infertility (1987-1992) 5. The hassle over getting "Quilters" approved as a musical for our church. (1992) 6. reading MINISTERING CROSS CULTURALLY by Sherwood Lingenfelter (1983) 7. Depression (2000-2002) 8. Going from understudy to Lead in HS play (1977) 9. God's quick provision of adopting our son Cameron and the steps to moving to China that soon followed (1996-97) 10. Confronting my "perfect family" about how hurtful our family culture of "put downs" and "teasing" is (2005) 11. Using a counselor in sorting out the hurt, problems and issues of a soured relationship between 2 couples. 12. Going through STEPS TO FREEDOM IN CHRIST, by Neil Anderson, then doing it with some people I care about.
1. Sitting all alone in a car, rain pouring all around outside, you're feeling cold and wet, alone in a foreign land, absolutely no one to turn to and feeling downright miserable because your ex-girlfriend confessed her betrayal to you that morning.
2. Being consistently bullied and abused unjustly by a senior warrant officer in the army and then shooting an email to my officer that went all the way up to the Colonel and resulting in the warrant officer being transferred out.
3. Writing "RI" as my top choice of secondary school in primary 6 and having every single one of my classmates laugh at me, only to be one of the few at the end who made it to RI.
4. Being caught in a gang armed robbery in an arcade in PJ, Malaysia together with another group of gangsters who were victims of this robbery and when the robbers fled, one of the gangster victims thrust an axe that had been left behind by the robbers and exhorting me to follow them to go 'chop' up the robbers...
5. Getting a C5 for my English Literature for 'O' Levels and insisting on taking it for my 'A' levels and being the only non-humanities class student whose selected poem was read to the humanities students and subsequently scoring an 'A' for Literature at 'A' levels.
6. Doing River Crossing in the Army at some foul-smelling river and being absolutely cold, wet & hungry and having to wait to do a night crossing - learnt the 3 ultimate worst experiences for a man in his entire life - cold, wet & hungry.
7. Representing Singapore in Judo in an international competition, only to be flung about and hanging on for dear life by an Indonesian semi-professional for the 3 longest minutes of my life.
8. Sitting across someone whom I considered a dear friend in Secondary 4 when an internal inquiry was going on to find out who amongst us was a thief, and when the news was finally released that they had found the culprit, hearing that 'dear friend' say in all seriousness to me - "You Know, I really thought you were the one..."
9. Having an ex-girlfriend tell me - I'll always recommend you to anyone. Any girl who ends up with you will be the luckiest girl in the world.
10. Playing Neville Tan in Jailhouse Rock in 2001 and having to take my final year exams the very next morning after the final performance. During one particular rehearsal, I remember internalising and becoming "Neville Tan" himself - the crying out in desperation was so real and traumatic that when I recovered from my sobbing, there was stunned silence in the chapel amongst the cast & crew.
On this site you'll find lessons from various courses and workshops I've been teaching. Acting, Scriptwriting, Intro to Theatre, Using Drama in Church...it's all here. Interested in using drama as ministry, or having a ministry to theatre practitioners? See the links at the sidebar.
Kimberly belongs to the tribe of Creatives. They are her people.
She loves to Mentor/Coach women leaders and emerging leaders. Together they cover spiritual, personal & leadership development issues.
New to her is the role of Shepherd to prisoners who call Chattanooga home. Through Chattanooga Endeavors "Stephen's Table" volunteers, she corresponds with them, and ministers to their families. She's looking for more volunteers to write those on the waiting list!
With her husband Jim, they open their home for personal retreats.
